PAURI 1(Stanza 1)
In this Pauri, Guru Nanak Dev ji says that we get what is destined for us. Accepting His Will is the only way to achieve true happiness in life.
SOUCHE SOCH NA HOVEEE, JE SOCHI LAKH WAR
Mind does not become pure even if you take bath thousands of times .
souchae:by bathing, soch: cleanliness or purity, lakh vaar: thousands of times
CHUPE CHUP NA HOVEEE, JE LAE RAHAAN LIV TAAR
Mind does not stop wandering by remaining silent even by constant (ritualistic) meditation.
chupe: by remaining silent, chup: silence, implies stop wandering, liv taar: constant meditation
BHUKHIAN BHUKH NA UTREE, JE BANNAA PUREEA BHAAR
Hunger of wealth does not diminish by collecting more wealth .
bhukhian: hungry, bhukh: hunger, implies hunger of wealth, uteri: removed, implied diminished, banhaa: riches, puriaa: worlds, bhaar: loads, literal meaning will be ‘hunger of wealth is not satisfied even if one packs loads of world’s riches’
SEHAS SIANPAA LAKH HOHE, TAA IK NA CHALE NAAL
Being extremely clever and knowledgeable cannot get you salvation .
sehas: thousands, implies extremely, sianpaa: clever thoughts, chalae naal: goes with you, implies gets you salvation
KIV SACHIARA HOEEAIE, KIV KOORE TOOTAI PAL
Then how can we be truthful (spiritually pure)? How can we get rid of falsehood (illusion of worldly evils)?
kiv: how, sachiaraa: truthful, koorae: falsehood, tutae: breaks, paal: waal, literal meaning will be ‘how to be truthful, how to break the wall of falsehood’
HUKAM RAJAEE CHALNAA, NANAK LIKHIA NAAL II1II
Nanak says, be satisfied with what is destined for you, accept that as God’s will.
hukam: God’s Will, rajaee chalnaa: accepting His Will, likhia: written, naal: with, likhiaa naal: written for you, implies destined for you
This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.
