PAURI 16(Stanza 16)
In this Pauri, the word PANCH has been used several times. Panch means “the chosen one”. In old times, in India, five respectable and responsible people from a village were chosen to resolve disputes and make decisions. These were called Panch. Here Guru Nanak Dev ji refers to Panch as the person who practices SUNIAE (listening to God’s Name with love and devotion) and MANNIAE (having complete faith in God), as described in the previous eight Paurees.
PANCH PARVAAN PANCH PARDHAAN
The Panch (the chosen ones) are blessed, the Panch are spiritual leaders.
parvaan: accepted or blessed, pardhaan: leader.
PANCHE PAAVEH DARGEH MAAN
The Panch receive honor in God’s court.
dargeh: God’s court. Maan: honor
PANCHE SOHAE DAR RAAJAAN
The Panch are recognized as distinguished people.
sohae: adorn, dar rajaan: courts of the kings.
Literal meaning will be “the Panch adorn king’s courts”, – implies recognition and distinction
PANCHAA KA GUR EK DHIAAN
The Panch are recognized as distinguished people.
dhiaan: attention, or concentration
JE KO KAHAE KARAE VEECHAAR
If somebody ponders in deep thought about God and tries to describe Him .
kahae: describes, karae veechaar: does deep thinking, pondering
KARTE KAE KARNAE NAHEE SUMAAR
(he / she will realize that it is impossible to describe Him because) there is no end to His creation.
karte: the Creator’s (God’s), karnae: creation, nahee sumaar: cannot be counted
DHAUL DHARAM DAYA KAA POOT
Righteousness (Dharam) is the force (mythical bull) supporting the world, and righteousness comes from compassion (Daya).
Dhaul: the bull – implies supporting force (according to old Hindu belief, a giant bull is supporting the Earth), dharam: righteousness, daya: mercy, kindness, or compassion, poot: son or offspring.
SANTOKH THAAP RAKHIA JIN SOOT
And contentment (Santokh) comes from righteousness, and the World is kept in order by these (Dharam, Daya , and Santokh), like beads in a thread.
santokh: patience or contentment, thaap rakhia: keeps in order, or in balance, soot: thread
JE KO BUJHAE HOVAE SACHIAAR DHAVLAE UPAR KETAA BHAAR
If one understands this, (that it is Dharam, Daya, and Santokh that are sustaining the world), then one knows the truth about how much weight is being supported by the bull (i.e. then one understands that it is not the bull but God that keep the Universe in balance).

DHARTI HOR PARAE HOR HOR
Beyond this world there are other worlds and beyond them there are more and more worlds.
dharti: earth, hor: more, parae: beyond
TISTE BHAAR TALAE KAVAN JOR
Which is the power that is supporting the weights of all those worlds ? The implication here is that it is not the bull but God who is maintaining the balance, that exists in the Universe, through Dharam (righteousness), Daya (mercy), and Santokh (patience).

JEE JAAT RANGAA KE NAAV SABHNAA LIKHIA VURHEE KALAAM
All the living beings, with various names, colors, and species, are created by Him.
jee: living beings, jaat: kinds or species, rangaa: colors, naav: names, vurhee: ever-flowing, kalaam: pen.
Literal meaning will be “names, colors, and species of all living beings are written by His ever-flowing pen, i.e. created by Him”
EH LEKHA LIKH JAANAE KOE LEKHA LIKHIA KETAA HOE
Can anyone write an account of this (i.e. His creation)? how big that account will be?
lekha: account, likh: write, ketaa hoe: how much will it be?
KETAA TAAN SUAALEO ROOP
How great is his power, how fascinating is His beauty (nature).
taan: power or might, suaaleo: beautiful or fascinating, roop: beauty
KETEE DAAT JAANAE KAON KOOT
How great are nature’s bounties?, who has the ability to count them? (i.e. it is impossible to count His gifts).
daat: gifts or nature’s bounties, koot: measure or count
KEETAA PASAAO EKO KAVAAO
He created the Universe through a single command.
keeta: created, pasaao: expansion i.e. Universe, kavaao: word or command
TISTE HOE LAKH DARYAO
From that emerged hundreds of thousands of lives.
tiste hoe: from that happened, daryao: rivers, implies numerous lives
KUDRAT KAVAN KAHAA VEECHAAR
How can I comprehend and describe Your creation ? (i.e. I am powerless to describe the wonders of God’s creation).
kudrat: nature, or God’s Creation, kavan kahaa: how can I describe?, veechaar: think about or comprehend
VAARIAA NA JAAVAA EK VAAR
(I am so small that ) I have nothing to offer You that befits Your Greatness.
In old times, people used to offer sacrifices (material and life) to please Hindu gods and goddesses (Guru Nanak Dev ji discredited this practice). The number of sacrifices indicated the level of importance of the god or goddess. Here, Guruji expresses his humility and insignificance in relation to God by saying that “You (God) are so great that I am unworthy of even once to be made sacrifice to You” (i.e. I have nothing to offer that befits Your greatness).
vaariaa: sacrifice, ek vaar: one time.
Literal meaning will be “I cannot sacrifice even once”
JO TUD BHAAVAE SAAEE BHALEE KAAR
Whatever pleases You (God), is the best for us.
Tud: to You, bhaavae: pleases, bhalee kaar: good action
TU SADAA SALAAMAT NIRANKAAR II16II
You, the Formless (God), alone are everlasting.
sadaa salamat: always secure, implies everlasting, Nirankaar: formless
This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

AADI GRANTH AND DASAM GRANTH
Guru Gobind Singh ji, before passing away, gave Guruship to Guru Granth Saheb, also called Aadi Granth” (Aadi means the first).
Guru Gobind Singh ji included the bani (writings) of the 9th Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur ji, in Guru Granth Saheb, which was originally compiled by Guru Arjan dev ji (the 5th guru).
None of Guru Gobind Singh ji’s writings are included in Guru Granth Saheb. His bani (writings) are included in a separate Granth called Dasam Granth (Dasam means tenth).
Two of the five banis included in our Nitnem (the daily prayers) are written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. These are Jaap Saheb and ten Saweyeas. Chopaee Saheb, which is included in Rehras Saheb, is also written by Guru Gobind Singh ji.

[Contemplate and reflect upon knowledge and you will become benefactor to others.
When you conquer the five passions (lust, anger, greed, attachment, ego), then you shall become pure like a sacred shrine of pilgrimage. ||1|| ]
