PAURI 17(Stanza 17)

Each line in the next three Paurees starts with word ASANKH, which means countless or infinite. Guru Nanak Dev ji is expressing astonishment and admiration of the vastness of God’s Creation in theses Paurees.

ASANKH JAP ASANKH BHAAO

Countless (people) meditate (on Your Name), countless (remember You) with love.
jap: meditation, bhao: love.

ASANKH POOJA ASANKH TAP TAAO

Countless (people) worship You, countless practice self-punishment (to please You).
pooja: worship, tap: penance or slef-punishment, taao: practice.

ASANKH GRANTH MUKH VED PATH

Countless (people) recite from Vedas and the holy books.
granth: holy books, much: mouth – implies recite, ved path: writings of Vedaas.

ASANKH JOG MANN RAHEH UDAAS

Countless are yogis with their minds detached from the world.
jog: yogi, udaas: detached from world.

ASANKH BHAGAT GUN GYAAN VEECHAAR

Countless are devotees who ponder on Your qualities and Divine knowledge.
bhagat: devotee, gun: qualities or virtues, gyaan: knowledge, veechaar: serious thinking or pondering.

ASANKH SATEE ASANKH DAATAAR

Countless are righteous people and countless are generous donors.
sati: truthful or righteous, daataar: generous donor.

ASANKH SOOR MOH BHAKH SAAR

Countless are warriors who bear the brunt of steel (weapons) on their faces (i.e. bravely fight in battles).
soor: warrior, moh: face, bhakh: eat – implies confront or face, saar: steel – implies steel weapons like sword.

ASANKH MON LIV LAAE TAAR

Countless are silent devotees who are in continuous deep meditation.
mon: person who has vowed to remain silent, liv lae: in deep meditation, taar: continuous.

KUDRAT KAVAN KAHAA VEECHAAR

How can I comprehend and describe Your creation ? (i.e. I am powerless to describe the wonders of God’s creation).
kudrat: nature, or God’s Creation, kavan kahaa: how can I describe?, veechaar: think about or comprehend.

VAARIAA NA JAAVAA EK VAAR

I have nothing to offer that befits Your Greatness, not even my life.
vaariaa: sacrifice, ek vaar: one time.
Literal meaning will be “I cannot sacrifice even once i.e. I am so small that sacrificing even my life on Him is not an offering worthy of His Greatness”

JO TUD BHAAVAE SAAEE BHALEE KAAR

Whatever pleases You is the best for all.

Tud: to You, bhaavae: pleases, bhalee kaar: best thing.

TU SADAA SALAAMAT NIRANKAAR II17II

You, the Formless (God), alone are everlasting.
sadaa salamat: always secure, implies everlasting, Nirankaar: formless.

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.
